charity page british lung foundation kirkwood hospice raft |
The expedition was being undertaken to raise money for three charities. The principal charity is British Lung Foundation and their Sarcoidosis Research Project. The other two charities are RAFT and Kirkwood Hospice. A raffle is being run so that we can thank you for your kind support. Every £5 you send us for one of our designated charities enters you in the draw, which will take place 2 weeks after our return. Prizes currently include the use of a private capsule on the London Eye (max number of people 25) or if you're really lucky you could win the wooden spoon prize - a photo of the dinner with all the teams signatures ! Full details of all the prizes can be found here. The British Lung Foundation [Sponsorship forms] Sarcoidosis is a lung disease that the team leader, Henry Shelford, suffered from. He has been fortunate in that it gave him only minor scarring in his lungs and the fact his health has been fully restored has provided the catalyst for this expedition. People who get sarcoidosis don't know what is going to happen to them. They are told they can get complete remission forever, that they could get remission but have severe debilitating scarring, or that their sarcoidosis cannot be stopped. If that happens the lymph nodes continue to expand affecting the soft tissue areas of the body. In particular, the eyes, heart and liver gradually degrade. Sarcoidosis can lead to death. For the sufferer it is simply a lottery. Very little is known about Sarcoidosis. We don't know what causes it, why some people can be cured and why some people cannot. This is why Sarcoidosis research is so important. The British Lung Foundation do not have currently have a Sarcoidosis research project. They will use the money raised here to initiate research into Sarcoidosis and start to plug the world-wide knowledge gap. Kirkwood Hospice [Sponsorship form] Kirkwood Hospice provides community care and patient support for terminally ill people. RAFT [Sponsorship form] RAFT is a medical research charity based at Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood, Middlesex, specialising in the fields of burn injury treatment and reconstructive plastic surgery. Your support will enable RAFT to push ahead with its vital research into the sinister cancer, melanoma. The approach is on three fronts - prevention (sunscreen study and early diagnosis), antibody targeting (manipulating antibodies to act as a 'magic bullet' to detect and destroy melanoma safely) and gene therapy (to identify those at high risk and tailor-make their treatment). |

William Hill have been kind enough to lay on a £250 charity bet ... at 4:1 that we don't make it! If we do, then that's £1,250 for our cause! They'll still pay the £250 if we don't. Thank you William Hill for your support. You can see the betting slip by clicking here. |
