TEAM ARRIVE IN KATHMANDU ! As we go to press, the team has landed in Kathmandu and are currently out celebrating the Nepali New Year ... the exedition has begun ! Bemused mountaineers at Kathmandu's top trekking Summit hotel were amazed to wake this morning to find 10 gentlemen out in the garden by the hotel pool, sitting at a luxuriously fine dinner table in top hat and tails ! They came running, cameras in hand ! Kit, Summit Hotel's trekking director and a seasoned climber, could only stroke his beard in wonder and mutter "Well, eccentric is just about the only word to describe it". Andy Chapman, Jagged Globe's professional mountain guide, looked on in amazement, not sure if he had landed the best-ever trip to lead, or the biggest group of tickaloons in climbing history ! And the expedition sirdar, Pemba, simply sat back in his courtesy dining chair with the biggest grin on his face, convinced that this really was the proof in the pudding that the British reall y are bonkers ! The Rum Doodle expedition, that his grandfather has warned him about in his childhood stories, had finally returned ! It all comes at the end of an incredibly busy week. The BBC interest mentioned in our last update grew out of all proportion, so that by the time the team arrived at Heathrow on Saturday evening there had been four live BBC radio interviews and a great TV piece on the Saturday evening South-East news, where the two Rob's could be seen sorting the vast amount of kit into barely portable travel bags as they prepared to set off ! There was even a Full Monty style summit change of attire ! And not to be left behind, ITV's London Tonight leapt in with a similar piece on Saturday night TV, screening Henry in similar disarray as they prepared to leave. There was even a call from Russian State television seeking to film a white-tie departure ! BBC coverage also included the frontpage of the BBC news website, where the story can still be found, and the team left the UK minutes after being overwhelmed by the burst of publicity. This in turn led to the expedition being listed on the front page of the Mount Everest climbing website, everest.net, where the motives or madness behind the challenge were questioned with much hilarity. Do these amateur climbers now qualify as mountaineers, we wonder, after such esteemed commentary ?! The flood of coverage also brought in a poignant reminder to the team of exactly what those motives are and why this is an expedition that has already succeeded, regardless of whether the summit is actually reached. The reminder came in an email on Saturday evening from a father and loving husband who had recently lost his wife to sarcoidosis. Having seen the BBC article, he made the extremely kind and generous step of donating 5,000 pounds to the charity fundraising for the British Lung Foundation, increasing to 25,000 pounds the current amount raised, which will go towards new research by the BLF into the causes and cures of sarcoidosis, thereby helping those who continue to suffer from this little-known illness. Increased coverage of course means increased sponsorship, and with the high profile achieved in the past week the expedition headquarters hotlines have been buzzing. Qatar Airways kindly stepped in to offer help to the team in flying out the kit needed for the challenge; the Waverley International Wines & Spirits group put some financial backing towards the expediton costs and created a specially-sealed high-altitude bottle of their new Moondara vintage red for the team to enjoy on the summit, and a number of generous companies such as the English Wines Group, the Stilton Cheese Association joined exising sponsor Jordans Cereals in kindly providing further prizes for the charity raffle. Tomorrow the team leave Kathmandu, flying at 8 am up to the Tibetan capital Lhasa, where they spend three days acclimasiting to the harsh change to 3,750 metres before heading over to the Everest region to begin the climb ...
